AIDS and poverty The fight against AIDS is closely related to the fight against poverty. Especially the poorer countries are affected by HIV and AIDS. Four out of five partners joined in STOP AIDS NOW!, namely Cordaid, Hivos, ICCO and Oxfam Novib, are concentrating on poverty reduction and development assistance. Through the partnership they are strengthened to further mainstream HIV and AIDS within their activities. On the other hand the Aids Fonds concentrates on AIDS-specific activities, such as increasing access to treatment.
All activities are carried out in cooperation with local partners (counterparts) of the organisations united in STOP AIDS NOW!. The partnership does not aspire to build an own network in the south.
Improving existing methods and cooperation The exceptionality of the HIV/AIDS problem makes that standard methods are not always effective. In search of new answers, STOP AIDS NOW! encourages innovation and the development of new methods and forms of collaboration. In order to realise this objective so-called development projects have been designed. The structure and the working method applied within these projects stimulate innovation. Each project is dedicated to a specific theme. The themes of the development projects are jointly selected by all partners united within STOP AIDS NOW! The most important criteria for selection was ‘urgency’. The present themes are: managing HIV and AIDS in the workplace, orphans and vulnerable children, and gender.
Within the development projects the STOP AIDS NOW! partners and their counterparts in the south work closely together. In order optimise the outcome local stakeholders are involved. In most cases a development project is carried out in at least two countries. The gender project for example will be carried out in Kenya and Indonesia. Working in a high and in a low prevalence country is meant to provide opportunities for cross-regional analysis and comparison. STOP AIDS NOW! hopes there will be the possibility to replicate the good practices discovered in the high prevalence country, in the low prevalence country. Thus contributing to early intervention.
Involving the Dutch population STOP AIDS NOW! campaigns use a variety of media to inform the Dutch population about the scale and impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We aim to enhance and expand Dutch contribution towards the global fight against HIV and AIDS. The campaigns are mainly concentrated around World Aids Day. STOP AIDS NOW! has an own youth brand, Dance4Life, to involve young people too.
Putting HIV and AIDS on the political agenda Through lobby STOP AIDS NOW! aims to influence Dutch and European politics. AIDS must stay high on the political agenda to ensure that sufficient means are set aside and all supporting measures are taken for the fight against HIV and AIDS.
