Economic Crisis threatens lifesaving AIDS treatment of 3.8 million Africans

STOP AIDS NOW! raises alarm in a report launched today on World AIDS Day
As a result of the economic crisis there is considerably less money available in Africa to fight the AIDS epidemic. This is either due to decreased government revenues, household incomes and donor funding. 3.8 million HIV-positive Africans who need treatment right now, will have to wait even longer. The threat exists that this waiting list will turn into a death list. Especially in a time of economic recession, wealthy countries need to live up to their commitment. If they fail to do so, they are breaking their promise to provide more HIV positive people in developing countries with AIDS treatment. This is stated by STOP AIDS NOW! in their report ‘The Real Victims of the Economic Crisis live in Africa’. Starting today, the organization commences a nationwide campaign calling on the Dutch public to support the AIDS response, especially in this time of crisis. Read more...

World Population Foundation and STOP AIDS NOW! have recently published the revised version of the ‘Evidence and rights based Planning and Support Tool for SRHR/HIV Prevention interventions for young people.’ This user-friendly tool provides a checklist of 28 characteristics with very practical questions that can guide project planners and implementers in making SRHR/HIV prevention programmes for young people more effective. Furthermore the tool provides information on behaviour change and systematic project planning. It is available in English, French and Portuguese. Local partners in Pakistan, Mali, South-Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe have been trained by STOP AIDS NOW! partner ICCO in using the tool.

What's new?

Epidemic Update
According to new data in the 2009 AIDS epidemic update, new HIV infections have been reduced by 17% over the past eight years. UNAIDS reports that the number of people living with HIV worldwide continued to grow in 2008, reaching an estimated 33.4 million. In 2008, the estimated number of new HIV infections was 2.7 million, which signals that the epidemic appears to have stabilised in most regions. The continuing rise in the population of people living with HIV reflects the combined effects of continued high rates of new HIV infections and the beneficial impact of antiretroviral therapy. With five new people becoming infected for every two put on antiretroviral treatment, the report calls for strengthened prevention efforts that are based on evidence and embedded in treatment programmes and other health and social services. Research - Effects of Managing HIV and AIDS in the Workplace
The STOP AIDS NOW! pilot project ‘Managing HIV and AIDS in the workplace’ in Uganda has been finalised. The end of the applied research report elaborates on important themes for HIV and AIDS workplace policy development and implementation. Important effects of internally mainstreaming HIV and AIDS in Ugandan organisations are a reduction of actual and feared stigma and discrimination, active involvement of people living with HIV and AIDS, an increase in disclosure of one’s status; and more access to and uptake of services.
