Internationally, the Dutch government stresses the importance of being open about HIV and AIDS. It aims to generate political commitment among governments, communities and civil society organisations. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to improve coordination among donors. It believes that the coordinating role of UNAIDS should be strengthened.
The Dutch government is looking to increase the availability of cheap medicines and condoms. Dutch policy focuses on the most vulnerable groups - women and girls, orphans, and people with HIV. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs also helps developing countries implement HIV and AIDS programmes. Dutch development organisations are encouraged to implement an integrated HIV/AIDS policy in consultation with their partner organisations in the South.
The Netherlands has doubled its spending on the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria: from €135 million in 2002 to €270 million in 2007.
