STIGMA AND DISCRIMINATION

Protecting and promoting the rights of PLHIV
STOP AIDS NOW! does not only work closely together with The Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+). We also support organisations of people living with HIV in developing countries. Both play a crucial role in advocating the protection and promotion of the rights of those infected.

The negative effects of criminalising HIV
In recent years a growing number of countries have taken steps to criminalise HIV transmission. These measures indirectly imply that people living with HIV are a danger to society. Such hidden messages reinforce stigma and reduce the effectiveness of HIV prevention efforts.

Evidence shows that stigma and discrimination are still major road blocks to universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

A call to end discrimination and criminalisation
GNP+ and STOP AIDS NOW! call on governments to end HIV related discrimination and criminalisation. We both support the call of the United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon for the organisation’s member states to “review their legal frameworks to ensure compliance with the human rights principles on which a sound AIDS response is based.”
