- vulnerable groups: women and girls

Women and girls
Women and girls are not only physiologically more vulnerable to infection with HIV, they are also confronted with social, economical and legal disadvantages which make it more difficult for them to protect themselves against infection. Research has shown that prevention programmes tailored to women’s needs can reduce a woman’s risk of HIV infection. Currently, there are still far too few evidence-based programmes specifically designed for this group, so it is essential that new programmes are developed.

Prevention programmes for women include:

  1. Easy access to prevention services
  2. Research into new prevention methods that put women in control
  3. Policy reforms
  4. Changing gender norms
  5. Influencing the behaviour and attitudes of men

One of STOP AIDS NOW!'s development projects is dedicated to gender. Within the section 'Our Work' you will find more information on the project and the gender issue in general.
