Young people
UNAIDS estimates that people aged under 25 years account for half of all new HIV infections. Young people’s risk of HIV infection is closely correlated with age and sexual debut (Pettifor et al., 2004). HIV prevention services for young people need to be accessible, evidence-based, age-specific and gender responsive. Also of importance is the development of life skills.

HIV prevention programmes which promote condoms and at the same time promote delayed initiation of sex are considered to be the most effective. For the many young people who are sexually active, access to comprehensive prevention services — including prevention education and condom provision — represents an urgent health necessity.

One of STOP AIDS NOW!'s development projects is dedicated to orphans and vulnerable children. Within the section 'Our Work' you will find more information on the project and the OVC issue in general.
