Highlight Day Two
Universal Access to Female Condomes
Oxfam Novib, World Population Foundation and IDA Solution
WPF gave a very lively and energetic demonstration on the use of the female condom. A large group of interested young women and man joined us to see the presentation. With help of a brief questionnaire the facilitator underlined that female condoms are just as safe, if not safer as male condoms. Most of us might not be used to using a female condom. But as the facilitator says “If you practice a few times, they become as easy to use as a male condom”. One of the greatest prejudices of the female condom is that it would be noisy. However with the introduction of the latest version of the condom, this is no longer true. The new material used doesn’t make any noise at all. Unfortunately the prices for female condoms are still too high. In order to create universal access the women condom must become much more affordable.
At the end of the presentation the public was challenged to find a new name for the female condom, some suggestions were: funnydona or femidone.
