Initiatives involving men and boys - MASVAW (India)
Context
HIV has risen disproportionately among women and girls. Gender-based power imbalances make it difficult for women and girls to negotiate safer sex or refuse sex, and research shows unequal power in sexual relationships is associated with partner violence and inconsistent condom use. To counter the increased vulnerability of women and girls to HIV/AIDS we must address gender-based discrimination, so HIV prevention strategies and interventions should promote egalitarian perceptions, behaviour and norms.
The gender development project
The gender development project supports community- and faith-based groups and non-governmental organisations in Kenya and Indonesia in their efforts to provide HIV prevention. The project focuses on three themes: HIV/AIDS, gender and women’s rights. Working from a cross-thematic perspective, it brings together organisations from the HIV/AIDS, women’s empowerment and human rights sectors. Securing and protecting the human rights of women and girls is essential if we are to address their increased vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.
Three intervention levels
Local groups will conduct activities at individual and community levels, and network for change at a broader social level. Intervening beyond the individual level facilitates community support. Networking on joint lobbying and advocacy issues can help bring about an improved legal and social environment for women and girls.
