Orphans and Vulnerable Children
- Project information: description

Working together
For the OVC project, the STOP AIDS NOW! partners have joined forces with Dutch child-centred organisations like Save the Children Netherlands, World Population Foundation, Plan Netherlands, World Vision and Edukans.

Main themes
The OVC development project focuses on two main themes:

  • Effective prevention of HIV infection
  • Strengthening mechanisms in communities to provide comprehensive protection, care and support for OVC

Working method
The OVC development project works according to a participatory learning process with partners in the Netherlands and partners in the project countries.
This learning process consists of:

  • Assessing the current OVC situation within the country
  • Identifying the knowledge and expertise available among the organisations involved
  • Identifying needs for specific knowledge and expertise
  • Identifying gaps between available and required knowledge
  • Developing and implementing specific learning tracks, based on this needs assessment
  • Using action-oriented research to evaluate and adapt the process of assessment, development and implementation.

Practical outcomes and new insights will be made available to other organisations so that they can be used for or adapted to the specific situations in their countries.

South Africa

  • Setting minimum standards of skills, knowledge and support for staff and volunteers working with children and young people — ‘4Life Facilitators’
  • Networks of care between schools and community leaders to improve the well-being of OVC
  • Meaningful participation of children and young people
