Country project information - Uganda
The project aims at facilitating 76 local NGOs to develop and implement comprehensive HIV and AIDS workplace policies including access to prevention information, treatment, and stigma and discrimination reduction strategy. The project is hosted by the Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development (ACORD), and activities are directed by the Local Project Group composed of 8 organizations and a project coordinator. Who in addition, liaises with a workplace policy review committee and three lead NGOs.

The project goal is to contribute to the reduced spread and better management of HIV and AIDS in the workplaces among participating organisations in Uganda.

Objectives

  • Build capacity of organizations in increasing understanding, ownership and better practices in managing of HIV and AIDS in the workplace
  • Support the participating organizations to develop and implement comprehensive HIV and AIDS policies
  • Develop a local structure to enforce the linking and learning and scale up of managing HIV and AIDS in the workplace
  • Establish collaboration and advocacy at a country level in regard to resource mobilization, information sharing and advocacy on key HIV and AIDS workplace policy issues

Activities

  • Training HIV and AIDS peer educators, leadership trainings on managing HIV and AIDS at the workplace
  • Technical support-supervision to partner organisations on how to develop, implement workplace policy programs
  • Networking with local, regional and international development organizations in the area of HIV and AIDS response
  • Carrying out operation research among participating organizations
  • Knowledge management (planning and implementation of monitoring & evaluation, reports)
  • Reviewing workplace policies and providing guidance to NGOs
  • Advocacy planning and implementation
  • Active promotion of arrangements for Voluntary Counseling and Testing for staff and families
  • Promotion of HIV preventive information and efforts including access to treatment at workplace


Structure of the country project
There are participating 76 NGOs in the project. They are supported through a locally chosen and owned project structure. The project group and the coordinator are hosted by ACORD HASAP, an international NGO in addressing HIV and AIDS in the workplace. The project also involves other actors, including government institutions, UNAIDS, ILO, the National AIDS Commission and health insurance companies. Click here to view the organisation chart.
