Country project information - Ethiopia
The STOP AIDS NOW! Pilot project in Ethiopia was run for a period of 2004-2005. This pilot initiative on internal mainstreaming can be considered as a first phase that enabled 11 Ethiopian NGOs to internally mainstream HIV and AIDS through developing and implementing HIV and AIDS workplace policy.
The current phase of the project running for three years has been designed on the basis of lessons gained from the pilot phase and the developments that have taken place in the country. The project aims to facilitate the capacity development and action learning process between 35 NGOs partnering with Cordaid and Oxfam Novib. The project is under implementation since 2007 employing four organizational learning cycles in particular reference to HIV and AIDS internal mainstreaming. These are: HIV and AIDS workplace policy (re) formulation; implementation of the workplace policy and engagement in lobby and advocacy (action); individual and group reflection on the process; and learning that includes trainings and research undertakings on emerging issues.
Objectives
The overall goal of the project is to contribute towards the national efforts of reducing vulnerability and curbing the impact of HIV and AIDS in Ethiopia. The project envisages supporting the capacity of 35 NGOs in Ethiopia to effectively respond to the challenges of HIV and AIDS in their organization.
The project has four interlinked objectives:
- Setting in place efficient and functional coordination mechanisms for HIV and AIDS internal mainstreaming
- Facilitation of linking and learning among 35 participating NGOs and other stakeholders
- Provision of support to 35 NGOs to mainstream HIV and AIDS in their organizations
- Ensure protection of rights of people affected and infected by HIV and AIDS within participating NGOs
The project adopts a systematic approach in the HIV and AIDS internal mainstreaming. It is foreseen that this approach portrays successful strategies and models that are developed and applied in other countries with taking into account the Ethiopian local context. The STOP AIDS NOW! Project Office in Ethiopia will facilitate the capacity development process of organizations through closely working with them and together understanding the process at deeper level.
