HIV and AIDS negatively affect performance
Worldwide more then 40 million people are infected with HIV. The absolute numbers of deaths related to HIV is estimated to be around 25 million. AIDS is negatively affecting development and one need to only look at falling life expectancy to get a sense of the impact. What is less clear, but also true, is that AIDS is negatively affecting the performance and effectiveness of organisations.
Costs of having workplace policies are worth it
Workplace policies help to reduce impact of HIV and AIDS. The costs of having workplace policies are worth it as the positive effects by far exceed the extra costs. Yet, many organisations, especially local NGOs do not yet have an HIV and AIDS workplace policy.
Obstacles to define a workplace policy
Local NGOs recognise that it makes sense to invest in managing HIV and AIDS in the workplace including a stigma reduction strategy in order to reduce the negative effects that AIDS has on their work. Obstacles to actually define a strategy are the fear to discuss additional costs with donors and the fear to be open about the ways that AIDS is affecting their performance. As donors in the STOP AIDS NOW! partnership we have decided to not remain silent and compound the denial among donors and NGOs of any need to manage HIV and AIDS in the workplace.
