A Multi-country Diagnostic Study published by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and Horizons on the involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS in community-based prevention, care and support programmes in developing countries suggests several levels of involvement. From a greater involvement where PLHIV take part in management, policy making and strategic planning, to PLHV being involved as beneficiaries or users of services, if tools are applied to involve target groups.
The Asia Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (APN+) shows different examples of GIPA activities on their APN+ Position Paper 2 GIPA, going from peer support to Public Health Policy and Legislation.
Organisations and networks of people living with HIV are central to the achievement of GIPA. The UNAIDS report 2004, with the section “Essential role of People living with HIV/AIDS” shows examples on how these organisations have been contributing to the GIPA principle.
STOP AIDS NOW! recently requested an study on how GIPA is practiced within STOP AIDS NOW! partners and programmes. The exploratory study entitled “A world to involve” , with particular attention to the contribution made to achieving GIPA by the organisations and networks of PLHIV. The In-depth studies observe the contribution of organisations of PLHIV and how GIPA is applied in Zambia, Kenya, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Indonesia.
At country level, GNP+ provides the GIPA report Card. It is an advocacy tool, aiming to increase and improve the programmatic, policy and funding actions taken to realize the greater involvement of people living with HIV in a country’s HIV response. The pilot phase took place in Kenya, India, Lesotho, and Trinidad and Tobago.
