Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) links HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), thus bringing together work on the issues at various levels, such as policy, advocacy, programming, and operations. Integration of operations includes providing HIV related services – such as testing, prevention, treatment, care, and support – and referrals for these in the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) context and vice versa.

Our approach

Linking makes intuitive sense. The majority of HIV infections are sexually transmitted or are associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) increase the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV, and sexual and reproductive ill health and HIV share root causes. Linking also makes practical sense. It can maximise efficiencies, increase impact and outreach, and improve community participation in HIV and SRHR issues and interventions.

Following high-level political commitment to intensify linkages, health policy makers and programme designers at national level are focusing on HIV and SRH service integration. However, in many cases, approaches are proving exclusively technical, and many challenges remain to ensure people receive high-quality services. Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) works with civil society-based organisations and governments in generalised epidemics. The aim is  to support efforts to join HIV and SRH in a way that goes beyond ’hardware’ integration issues to include explicit attention to human rights and the structural issues that weaken health service delivery and threaten people’s sexual and reproductive wellbeing.
